1997 UEFA Champions League Final : Borussia Dortmund - Juventus

August 26th, 2009

28 May 1997. Munich - Olympiastadion.

Karl-Heinz Riedle put Dortmund ahead finishing from Paul Lambert’s cross. Riedle then made it 2 - 0 with a bullet header from a corner kick.

In the second half, Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero, who had come on as a substitute, scored on a heel deflection after a cross, to make the score 2-1. Then 20 year old substitute and Dortmund local boy Lars Ricken fastened on to a through pass by Andreas Möller. Only sixteen seconds after coming on to the pitch Ricken chipped Angelo Peruzzi in the Juve goal from over twenty yards with his 1st touch of the ball. Ricken became the youngest player ever to score in a Champions League final, and his goal was the fastest ever by a substitute in said event. With Zinedine Zidane unable to make an impression against Lambert’s marking, Juve were beaten. The 3 - 1 victory gave Borussia their first — and only to date — Champions League title.
